 MONEYGRAM SCAM(S)

During recent months the Crestview Police Department has recieved criminal complaints involving the use of Moneygram services.  During these scams the victims have been enticed to purchase products online thru classsifieds such as E-Bay and Craigslist, as well as thru phone solicitations claiming false pretenses.

The phone solicitation involved a call claiming to be a law enforcement/corrections officer requesting money be paid to help an inmate/arrestee.

Please note:  Law enforcement/corrections agencies will not contact any individual directly to recieve money on behalf of the inmate/ arrested person.  The responsibility fall directly on the inmate/arrested person to secure funds for their release thru a bail bondsman or other means.

Online transactions requesting monies be paid thru money orders have frequently proven to be scams.  Once these funds are transferred they are nearly impossible to trace except under ideal circumstances.

Please be diligent in researching any online company and/or transaction prior to sending money via money order.  Transactions with reputable companies, using credible financial backing are your best bet for a safe and secure transaction.  To better inform yourself on these scams, please refer to www.ic3.gov .

Anyone with information concerning this or any other incident  is encouraged to contact the Crestview Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at (850) 682-4157.
