Have you ever wanted to learn what police officers do on the job on a day-to-day basis or what it is like to ride in the police car as an officer? Then you will get the opportunity starting June 10, 2014.

The Crestview Police Department is hosting a Citizen Safety Academy at Warriors Hall on Tuesday evenings beginning July 1, 2014 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Citizens who desire to attend the academy must be at least 17 years of age and live or work in Okaloosa County. There will only be openings for 25 applicants and there is no cost.

The objective of the Citizen Safety Academy is not to train an individual to be a “Reserve Police Officer” but to produce informed citizens. The citizens and police officers will meet each other face to face in a neutral, friendly setting and each becomes a person to the other. In the past, citizens have simply seen a uniform, now they can have a understanding about the person behind the badge.

The academy will be eleven consecutive Tuesday nights beginning June 10th and ending with a graduation and closing ceremony on September 9, 2014. Some of the topics include: traffic, patrol, evidence, investigations, domestic violence, drug investigations, law, community service, SWAT, communications, firearm safety and emergency aid. There will also be representativesrom the Crestview Fire Department, the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, Okaloosa County EMS, the Medical Examiner, Probation and Parole Services, and the Okaloosa Correctional Institute.

Once a person has completed the academy, those who desire to do so will have an opportunity to become a part of the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association(CPAAA). The CPAAA will provide vital volunteer support to and for the police department.

Applications may be obtained at the Crestview Police Department at 201 Stillwell Boulevard, or this link here: Crestview Police Department CSA App or for more information contact Community Service Officers Wanda Hulion( or Sam Kimmons(
