The Crestview Police Department, along with law enforcement agencies across the nation will be actively stepping up seat belt enforcement efforts during the National Click It or Ticket campaign from May 12 – 26, 2014. During this campaign, public awareness efforts are increased and the public can expect to see officers increasing traffic enforcement activities while paying special attention to seat belt violations, both day and night.
In Florida alone, 462 people sustained fatal injuries in traffic crashes while not wearing a seatbelt and 4,269 sustained injuries while not wearing a seat belt in 2012.
“We want to stress that regularly buckling up works, and we know of too many cases that all too often end in tragedy,” said Sgt. Brian Muhlbach, the Traffic Safety Programs Supervisor for the Crestview Police Department. Sgt. Muhlbach further debunked a common misconception that those who choose not to buckle up are only placing themselves at risk. “When involved in a crash, seat belts help restrain the driver in the driver’s seat. Often times, an unbuckled driver is thrown around the vehicle, meaning they cannot maintain control of their vehicle. This places other motorists in danger,” explained Sgt Muhlbach.
A seat belt violation in Crestview will cost a driver $108.00, according to the Okaloosa County Clerk of Courts. Click It or Ticket 2014
